Scots are being warned to stay vigilant against rogue firms attempting to profit from home insulation scams by falsely claiming affiliations with consumer watchdogs.Advice Direct Scotland (ASD), the organisation behind the free consumeradvice.scot service, noted a spike in complaints from homeowners about offers to rectify botched and mis-sold spray foam insulation.
The charity said that they have had calls from all over Scotland about companies implying they are in collaboration with Trading Standards in a bid to seem more credible. There is growing concern that the same rogue traders, who initially deceived consumers into buying the spray foam, could now be sharing customers' personal data or even re-branding themselves to con the same people yet again.
ASD highlight a case where an 86-year-old man from Glasgow and elderly couples from Dundee and Stenhousemuir were left worried after receiving identical letters and, in some instances, phone calls.Between them, they had already shelled out nearly £13,000 for work prior to receiving the latest odd correspondence, leading them - or their relatives - seeking advice.
Trading Standards Scotland (TSS) has categorically stated that it is not in partnership with any spray foam removal companies.
