Vapers have been warned about a "grim" health condition that could cause them to lose their sense of smell and taste. Known as 'vape tongue', dental experts have said the issue is becoming increasingly common.Anna Peterson, a London-based dental hygienist and therapist, explained in a TikTok video that most common signs include numbness of the tongue, an inability to taste vape flavours, experiencing an unpleasant taste from vaping, and even a general impact on taste buds, affecting the ability to properly taste food.According to Wales Online, Peterson also warned that the condition could lead to not only a loss of taste but can in fact lead to a stuffy nose and impact the sense of smell.

Explaining what causes it, she said: "If there's nicotine in your vape, then it's actually causing your mouth to dry out. This can completely remove your sense of taste." However, she offered some hope, adding: "If you start to cut down on vaping, or stop completely, your taste may come back".

Another symptom of the condition is a white powdery residue on the tongue, which can impact and slow down the regeneration of taste buds.

Experts have suggested that passing the Tobacco and Vapes Bill in the UK could make room for laws to deter children and younger people from vaping, including limits on e-cigarette flavours, packaging, and display.
