One of Scotland’s most-loved dog portraits now appears alongside other great artworks at the National Gallery. Dandie Dinmont terrier Callum – second only to Greyfriars Bobby as the nation’s favourite canine – has become the centre point in the gallery’s art museum.

Philanthropist James Cowan Smith bequeathed his fortune to the National 100 years ago on condition that they displayed the painting of his beloved pet.It has become one of the Edinburgh gallery’s most talked-about paintings and is a huge hit across its social media channels.

It also appears on a best-selling postcard. The gallery’s prints and drawings curator Charlotte Topsfield said: “Callum has been placed in quite a prominent spot.

He can now be easily found and is at a good height for all to look at him comfortably. The Dandie Dinmont, as a breed, has such a strong association with Scotland. “They are named after a character from a novel by Sir Walter Scott and Callum is now on display alongside portraits of Sir Walter.Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily updates on breaking news as well as the top headlines across Scotland. No one will be able to see who is signed up and no one can send messages except the Daily Record team. All you have to do is click here if you're on mobile, select 'Join Community' and you're in!If you're on a desktop, simply scan the QR code above with your phone and click 'Join Community'.We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
