A school in Trafford has been forced to close today after a fire broke out in a classroom. Firefighters were sent to Altrincham College, on Green Lane in Timperley, after the small blaze triggered a fire alarm at around 6am this morning (Tuesday). 'No serious damage' was caused, headteacher Ms Earle said.

The school will be closed today for ventilation, though formal exams are still going ahead for students in Years 11, 12 and 13. READ MORE: Fire crews called after blaze breaks out in room at Britannia Hotel The school will reopen as normal again tomorrow (Wednesday).

Ms Earle said: "A small fire was detected early this morning; there was no serious damage but, due to smoke, the school needs to ventilate a relatively large area meaning classrooms have to be closed and IT systems need to be checked. "We are unable to re-house those lessons elsewhere in school today.

All formal exams are still taking place and all staff are in school to support students taking exams. The school will reopen to all students tomorrow." A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 6.10am on Tuesday 24 May, firefighters were called out to Altrincham College of Arts on Green Lane in Timperley after a fire alarm at the building was triggered. "A fire engine from Altrincham Fire Station attended the scene and firefighters put out a small fire in a classroom with a bucket of water" Read more of today's top stories here
