Author Salman Rushdie has been attacked while on stage in New York, police have reported.The Booker Prize winner, whose books include Midnight’s Children, was attacked on the morning of Friday 12 August just before he was scheduled to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York.

According to New York State Police, a male suspect ran onto the stage where he attacked the 75 year old author and an interviewer at the event. “On August 12, 2022, at about 11 a.m., a male suspect ran up onto the stage and attacked Rushdie and an interviewer,” a statement read. “Rushdie suffered an apparent stab wound to the neck, and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital.

His condition is not yet known.The interviewer suffered a minor head injury.” “A State Trooper assigned to the event immediately took the suspect into custody.The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.” Salman is an author of 11 novels whose career has spanned over 40 decades after he burst onto the spotlight with his 1981 novel Midnight’s Children.

After selling over one million copies in the UK alone, the novel won the Booker Prize that same year and was later adapted into a 2012 film of the same name.
