Roger Federer produced some glimpses of his best tennis during his farewell match at the Laver Cup last night. The Swiss Maestro teamed up with great friend and rival Rafael Nadal to contest the last match of his illustrious tennis career.He has provided us with many memorable moments over the course of the last 24 years, but even in his final tennis appearance, the 20-time major winner treated fans to something they'd never seen before when he managed to squeeze a forehand through the net.
At 1-1 in the first set, the Swiss legend attempted to send a running forehand down the line which was called a winner, despite Federer mistiming it.Team World, including its captain John McEnroe, questioned the decision and a replay on the big screen confirmed the 41-year-old hit the ball through a gap between the net and the net post.
Despite threading the ball through the eye of a needle, Federer and Nadal had the point taken off them, to the disappointment of the lively O2 Arena crowd.
On commentary, Tim Henman summed things up by quipping: "He's still showing us things we've never seen before."
