Four people in Renfrew have been charged with allegedly providing illegal TV services as police crack down on streaming piracy.A joint operation between Trading Standards Scotland (TSS), Police Scotland and TV broadcaster Sky resulted in four people aged 51, 50, 46 and 45 being reported to the procurator fiscal in respect of the illegal sale and supply of IPTV services. It is alleged that the four, all from Renfrew, provided illegal access to broadcasts supplied by Sky and other content providers via IPTV/streaming services. Those charged have been reported for various offences against the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and the Trade Marks Act 1994 – offences which could result in a fine or a jail term if convicted.Fiona Richardson, chief officer of TSS, said: “I would like to remind consumers that in paying for or subscribing to illicit IPTV and other streaming services, they are contributing to the profits of wider organised criminal groups which are a blight on our communities.“The profits made by these criminals not only fund other illegal activities, but with a reduced income to the various broadcasters could put jobs at risk.Renfrewshire Live, the new free app dedicated to bringing you around the clock breaking news, is now available to download.Powered by the Paisley Daily Express, Renfrewshire Live is your go-to source for news, features and sport with live coverage provided direct to the app, seven days a week. The dedicated team of experienced journalists, responsible for the publication of the award-winning Express, will focus on breaking news, day and night, across Renfrewshire’s towns and villages. There is also a dedicated St Mirren section that will follow every kick of the ball with the Buddies.Avail
