So was a new kind of traditionalism. We were going back to the future. And that required a new kind of movie star. He needed a certain vibe: clean and handsome and a bit square.

He had to look like he could fit into a 1950s frat house. Tom Cruise, who became the biggest star of his time, was that to a T.

And so, in a slightly shaggier way, was his rival and compatriot in “Top Gun,” Val Kilmer. Kilmer was a classic camera object in an old-fashioned way.
