Police could start patrolling beer gardens to ensure drinkers comply with social distancing rules under plans to re-open pubs next month.

Customers will also be asked to order drinks on phone apps and sit at spaced-out tables, the Times reports. Under new Government guidelines on how the hospitality industry will operate post-lockdown, restaurants will also have smaller menus.

To stop coronavirus from spreading, staff will also no longer set tables in advance. Instead, napkins and cutlery will be brought out when meals are served, while all menus will have to be disposable and used only once.

There will also be a ban on self-service buffets, and waiters will be required to wash their hands every time they serve a new table.
