A prisoner who is serving an indefinite sentence for violent road rage cut his own ear off with a razor blade. Carl Lamb mutilated himself in front of a prison officer at HMP Swaleside, Kent in protest of his seemingly never-ending term.

The 40-year-old has been locked up since 2007, when he was convicted of wounding with intent following a nasty road rage incident.

While his mother Carol admits he is 'no angel' and deserved a long stretch for his violent crime, she argues his actions do not warrant an effective life sentence.

Carl is one of 2,000 prisoners in the UK still serving Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPPs) sentences, despite the term being abolished in 2012.
