Harry was educated at Wetherby School, Ludgrove School, and Eton College. He spent parts of his gap year in Australia and Lesotho. He then underwent officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned as a cornet (second lieutenant) into the Blues and Royals, serving temporarily with his brother Prince William, and he completed his training as a troop leader. In 2007–08, he served for over ten weeks in Helmand, Afghanistan, but was pulled out after an Australian magazine revealed his presence there. He returned to Afghanistan for a 20-week deployment in 2012–13 with the Army Air Corps. He left the army in June 2015.

Prince Harry seems to be getting the cold shoulder from King Charles and Prince William, a royal author has suggested. The Duke of Sussex's bond with his family has been on thin ice, particularly after he and Meghan Markle decided to step away from their senior royal duties in 2020.

Following a series of explosive revelations in interviews and Harry's tell-all memoir Spare released in 2023, the rift appears to have deepened.

A royal commentator has now claimed that both King Charles and Prince William are giving Harry the silent treatment as they grapple with significant issues, including the King and Princess Kate's private health battles with cancer.
