Primary schools shut in coronavirus hotspots and secondary return delayed

Some of England's primary schools will be shut in coronavirus hotspots - while secondary school pupils will now go back a week later than planned.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson announced major changes to the Commons today as he buckled to calls to delay returns to the classroom.

The top Tory said the majority of primary schools will open as planned on Monday 4 January. But in a small number of areas where infection rates are highest, only vulnerable children and those of key workers will attend face-to-face.

The list of areas will be published today on the gov.uk website - and will only be a “last resort” and not all Tier 4 areas, he said.
