The Premier League have released a statement after Liverpool were awarded a second-half penalty against Manchester United. Matthijs de Ligt was punished after handling the ball inside the box.

Alexis Mac Allister's header struck the arm of De Ligt in the 67th minute and referee Michael Oliver initially waved away huge appeals from the Anfield crowd.

However, after he was recommended by VAR to go over to the pitch-side monitor and look at the incident again, Oliver overturned his decision and awarded a spot-kick.

Mohamed Salah stepped up from 12 yards and fired Liverpool 2-1 in front after Cody Gakpo had cancelled out Lisandro Martinez's opener.
