Police issue update as elderly woman seriously hurt after being hit by car

A man who was arrested after an elderly woman was hit by a car in Wigan has been bailed, police have confirmed. The woman, aged 82, was knocked down by a Toyota CHR on Gidlow Lane at around 4.25pm on Tuesday (December 19).

She was left seriously injured and emergency crews rushed her to hospital. The driver of the car remained on the scene. A 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. In an appeal issued on Wednesday, police said they believed that before the crash, the Toyota CHR left the Tesco car park on Gidlow Lane and began to travel in a southerly direction.

It hit the woman as she crossed the road near Knowsley Road. Any witnesses are being urged to come forward. Officers can be contacted on 0161 856 4741 quoting reference number of 2406 of 19/12/2023.
