Ruben Amorim's agreement in principle to become the new Manchester United head coach comes six and a half years after the young coach spent time with the then-United manager Jose Mourinho at the club's Carrington Training Complex.
Months after rescinding his Benfica contract and retiring from football, Amorim started a postgraduate degree at the Faculty of Human Kinetics at the University of Lisbon.
Mourinho was a coordinator and lecturer on the High Performance Coaching course. He selected the best students to intern with him and his coaching staff as part of the program.
In late April 2018, Amorim was among three students selected and visited Mourinho during the latter stages of his final full season at United.
