Petition is launched in a bid to build 'Dark Sky 2' Observatory in Dalmellington

A petition has been launched in an attempt to have the Dark Sky Observatory, near Dalmellington, rebuilt.The observatory was destroyed by a fire in June 2021 and its loss to the community, and to observers of the sky, was a huge blow locally and nationally.Now a fresh attempt has been made by astronomy enthusiast, Dave Hancox, to rally support for a total rebuild of the structure.Dave’s petition states: “We, the concerned citizens and astronomy enthusiasts, call upon the relevant authorities to take immediate action to rebuild the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory (SDSO) on its original site, or in close proximity.“This iconic observatory played a crucial role in promoting scientific education, preserving our natural heritage, and fostering tourism in Scotland.”The SDSO was established in 2012 on the edge of Loch Doon.It quickly gained recognition as one of Europe’s leading public observatories due to its "exceptional stargazing conditions" and state-of-the-art facilities.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now.Get all the local news in your area – plus features, football news and the latest on the coronavirus crisis – at your fingertips 24/7.The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories while you can customise your page with the sections that matter to you.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now on iOS and Android.But in June 2021, a devastating fire ripped through the site and caused extensive damage.

In October last year, though, Ayrshire Live told how East Ayrshire councillors approved a funding request for a feasibility study to ‘explore options’ to replace the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory.The five-metre observatory dome was a spectacular feature.
