Naman Ramachandran The BFI London Film Festival’s annual Works-in-Progress showcase, now in its third edition, will present nine new feature films and documentaries by U.K.-based filmmakers. The showcase, which is part of the festival’s U.K. Talent Days focus, will be an in-person event on Oct. 8 screening extracts from each project introduced by their producer to an invited audience of international buyers and festival programmers. The projects are either in production or post-production. Clips will also be available online via a secure platform to a wider pool of invited international industry professionals. The annual Buyers & Sellers event returns as an in-person fixture at which international sales agents can meet with U.K. buyers, and NETWORK@LFF will host masterclasses and events for 12 U.K.-based writers, directors and producers to interact with international filmmakers and industry executives at the festival.

The BFI London Film Festival unveiled its 2022 lineup today, featuring 164 features and 23 premieres across film and TV, with highlights including the world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and the international premiere of She Said, starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan. Programmed by Ulrich Schrauth, the BFI’s immersive art and XR curator, this year’s program features interactive virtual reality, screen-based installations, augmented reality, mixed reality, immersive audio experience and live performance. The program will be at multiple venues on London’s South Bank. The highlight of the program is the world premiere, commissioned by the festival, of Guy Maddin’s “Haunted Hotel: A Melodrama in Augmented Reality,” which promises to transport the audience into a surreal paper world, created from a selection of clippings drawn from Maddin’s own personal archive, set to a soundscape by composer Magnus Fiennes.

Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, will have its European premiere at this year’s BFI London Film Festival.Director Rian Johnson’s highly anticipated sequel, which sees Daniel Craig reprise his role as detective Benoit Blanc, will close the festival on October 16 with a screening at London’s Southbank Centre.There will also be simultaneous preview screenings of the film at additional cinemas across the UK. Details of the screenings have yet to be announced.Along with Johnson and Craig, cast members Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Leslie Odom Jr, Kate Hudson and Madelyn Cline will attend the premiere.

The 66th BFI London Film Festival has set Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical as its Opening Night Gala. Directed by Matthew Warchus and starring Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Sindhu Vee and Alisha Weir as the eponymous Matilda, the film will have its world premiere on October 5 at the Southbank Centre in the Royal Festival Hall. Sony Pictures UK and TriStar release theatrically in the UK on December 2. Netflix will release the film elsewhere during the holiday season.

Naman Ramachandran The British Film Institute’s London Film Festival (LFF) is adopting a hybrid physical-online model for the first time in its history, and the process has been fraught with the myriad difficulties expected in a global pandemic.“The biggest challenge, the whole time, has been stepping into the unknown,” festival director Tricia Tuttle told Variety. A festival of the scale of LFF, that in pre-pandemic times screened some 250 features across the city, with offshoots around the U.K., takes at least five months to put together.
