Paralympic champion bids to join BBC reboot of Gladiators as first ever ‘bionic’ star

TEAM GB star Stef Reid is bidding to become the first “bionic” stars on Gladiators by joining the BBC reboot of the classic series. The world champion long jumper has applied to become one of the new stars of the show, which originally ran from 1992 to 2000 on ITV, and follow in the footsteps of legends Jet, Wolf and Rhino. The Paralympian, who won silver during London 2012, is eager to prove she can mix it with able-bodied athletes.

Dancing On Ice after a tense skate-off against Kye Whyte.The latest episode of the hit ITV show was marred by a number of trips and falls, with stars including Happy Mondays' Bez and professional dancer Regan Gascoigne stumbling over their steps.Poor Liberty ended up flat on her face after her pro partner Joe Johnson tried to life her off the ice.The stumble didn't affect Regan's score in the end though, as he tied at the top of the leaderboard alongside Kimberly Wyatt, with both of them scoring 36.5 out of 40.Stef Reid and Brendan Cole were next up, with both of the celebrities scoring 34 out of 40 for their routines.At the other end of the leaderboard was Bez, who performed a bee-keeping inspired routine to Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves, scoring just 19.5 out of 40.After the public vote was added to the judges' scores, it was revealed that Kye Whyte and Liberty Poole would be facing off in the latest skate-off.Liberty had scored a 28 for her rollercoaster routine to Right Round by Flo Ride and Kesha, while Kye scored 28.5 for his skate to Supermassive Black Hole by Muse.It wasn't a unanimous vote to eliminate Liberty, as judge Oti Mabuse chose to save her over Kye.However Ashley Banjo, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean all voted to save Kye, which meant the majority won and Liberty was sent packing.Ashley described the choice as "tough", saying: "You guys did a great skate off and it was really, really close."Oti said it was "really difficult" too, as she said: "My heart is with both of you and I really want both of you to do well."Following her elimination, Liberty told viewers: "I've enjoyed every second, I'm proud of myself."Last week, Kye went up against S Club 7 singer Rachel Stevens, but it was

Stef Reid has informed her online followers that she will still take part in "big lifts" despite experiencing a horrifying fall hours before appearing on Dancing On Ice.The star who made her debut on the show on Sunday night had a tumble with her dance partner Andy Buchanan before the live programme kicked off on ITV but still took part in her skate in spite of her nasty drop.Taking to Instagram recently, Steff explained what happened behind the scenes to her fans in a video and how she is currently feeling at the moment.Appearing alongside her dance partner Andy, she said in the clip: "So yesterday as you would have seen, we took a little bit of a tumble in rehearsal."We're both totally fine, honestly, it was our easier lift, it's never happened it was just a freak accident."Showing a clip of how the lift is usually done, Stef continued: "So basically I wasn't quite straight with this leg. So as I came up my foot grazed one of Andy's which wouldn't have been an issue but it was just by chance."Adding to the story while showing the hook that Steff accidentally hit, Andy explained: "Her toe pick hit my hook and that's what it looks like now and it was broken."Talking about the lift again, Stef said: "So Andy saved the lift, thank goodness, he took most of the fall," she laughed.Andy chimed: "I was bruised but not injured."Stef replied: "Honestly, I just grazed my knee, so that's that.

Dancing on Ice judge Christopher Dean has revealed that contestant Stef Reid fell on the rink just hours before her debut on the ITV show.The Paralympian athlete was part of the second group of contestants to perform their first routines on Sunday night.But hours before, it's been revealed that she took a tumblr during rehearsals when her pro partner Andy Buchanan was lifting her.A clip showed Andy performing a lift with Stef in the air, but he slipped on the ice which caused her to crash to the hard rink below.Andy attempted to flip Stef over but slipped, with Stef narrowly missing smashing her head on the icy ground at their feet.The duo immediately got back up onto their skates with Andy looking concerned at his celebrity partner.Christopher spoke of the fall during the judging section after the duo's routine, and he commended them for carrying on – and smashing the lift as planned.He said that Stef, who lost her foot in a horror accident in her teens, was "inspiring" for going out and completing the routine despite falling just hours before.He said: "Particularly inspiring to get on and do that performance tonight, because earlier on today in rehearsal you took a massive fall in a lift."You came down really heavy as we can see, and you just got back up, you ran through it tonight, you came back on and delivered that performance.

Stef Reid is set to make her Dancing on Ice debut on Sunday, as the second half of the 2022 line-up perform their first routine.The 37-year-old joins the likes of Love Island favourite Liberty Poole and The Vamps star Connor Ball, who will all be performing for the first time on the show after last week's launch.Stef, who previously competed on Celebrity MasterChef in 2018 and was a semi-finalist, is paired with pro skater Andy Buchanan and will perform with a special skating prosthetic leg, after losing her right foot as a teen.The pro athlete mainly competes in T44 long jump and sprint events, and has won a number of medals in her sports, including a silver in Long Jump F44 at the 2012 London games, and the 2016 Rio games.Stef, born to British parents in New Zealand, lost her right foot when she was 15 in a boating accident.The star, who moved to Toronto, Canada when she was four, had been enjoying a weekend with friends when the freak accident happened.The group had been having fun skimming across a lake while holding onto an inflatable ring which was being pulled by a boat.But tragedy struck when Stef took a turn, as she waited for the boat to come and collect her after falling off.She explained in 2016 how she noticed the boat wasn't slowing down as it came towards her, after a miscommunication between the driver and the spotter."I needed to think fast," she told The Mirror.
