R.E.M guitarist Peter Buck and Soundgraden‘s Kim Tahyil surprised fans when they joined The Black Crowes on stage at the latter band’s Seattle show earlier this week – watch the performances below.Both revered musicians appeared during the encore at The Black Crowes’ Chateau Ste. show at the Michelle Winery Amphitheatre in Woodinville, Washington, on Wednesday (July 20).Buck came out as a guest for a cover performance of his band’s ‘The One I Love’, sticking around as Thayil came out for the collective to perform a rendition of Velvet Underground‘s ‘Rock And Roll’.The Black Crowes posted a 12-minute video of the collaborative performances on their Instagram, which can be seen below.A post shared by @theblackcrowesThe Black Crowes had announced their reformation in 2019 for a ‘Shake Your Money Maker’ 30th anniversary tour, of which Wednesday’s Seattle-area show was a part of.They had shared news of their disbandment in 2015, with guitarist Rich Robinson saying the split was due to a disagreement with his brother, frontman Chris.

R.E.M. share top 40 of favourite songs by the band to mark “resurgence” in ‘The Bear’

R.E.M have put together a playlist of their top 40 songs in their discography to celebrate their “resurgence” in FX series The Bear. Check it out exclusively on NME below.The reflection on their 15-album legacy comes following the release of the second season of the award-winning drama The Bear, which features a number of the band’s tracks – including multiple iterations of ‘Monster’ album classic ‘Strange Currencies’.Now, in an NME exclusive, frontman Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry have hand-selected their top 40 songs from their past for a playlist of their personal favourites.Of the 40-track playlist, each member of R.E.M chose their top 10 tracks, with Stipe choosing the first quarter of the playlist – which kicks off with ‘World Leader Pretend’, a track from their 1988 album ‘Green’.From there, tracks 11-20 are hand-picked by Buck, and include songs ‘All The Way To Reno’ and deep-cut ‘You’re In The Air’, while tracks 21-30 are chosen by Mills and feature fan-favourites ‘It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)’ , ‘Orange Crush’ and ‘What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?’.The final 10 songs on the playlist are the favourites of drummer Bill Berry and includes the lesser-known song ‘Rotary Ten’ – from their 1986 album ‘Lifes Rich Pageant’ – as well as hit 1992 track ‘Find The River’.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic There has never been a compilation album in the history of rock as influential as “Nuggets,” a 1972 double-LP that revived a period and style that was seen as having ended about five years before. It was nostalgia of a sort for the very recent past — as opposed to the very distant past that’s now being celebrated with fondness as “Nuggets” itself surpasses the half-century, arguably no less central to a certain rock ‘n’ roll ethos than ever. Lenny Kaye, now best known as the guitarist for Patti Smith’s band, but then highly regarded as a rock critic, compiled the original “Nuggets” for Elektra and may have saved an early wave of garage-rock for the ages … although some would give the collection even more credit, for helping invent, or at least bring into focus, the burgeoning punk-rock movement in the 1970s.

Former REM drummer Bill Berry’s new band The Bad Ends announce debut album

The Bad Ends – featuring Mike Mantione of Five Eight and former REM drummer Bill Berry – have announced that they will release their debut album, ‘The Power And The Glory’, early next year. It’s the first LP recorded by Berry since leaving REM in 1997.Songs for the record were initially written for a Mantione solo album, but a chance meeting with Berry in Athens, Georgia – REM’s home town – led to a jam session, which in turn resulted in The Bad Ends being formed.“In very early 2017, a chance pedestrian encounter in downtown Athens found me face to face with one Mike Mantione”, says Berry.

Zakk Wylde says he’s been watching YouTube tutorials to learn songs for Pantera reunion shows

Zakk Wylde has revealed that he is preparing for upcoming Pantera shows by watching YouTube tutorials to help him to work out how to play some of the band’s songs.When Pantera’s Phil Anselmo and Rex Martin announced in July that they would reunite for shows next year, they revealed that Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante would stand in for late Pantera members Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul respectively.Since then, Wylde has been prepping hard for these Pantera shows, and he has now spoken to guitarist Ola Englund, via his YouTube channel, about how that prep is going.There’s a bit in REM’s 1996’s tour documentary ‘Road Movie’ (bear with me here!) where the band decide that they want to add an old song to their setlist. Unable to remember how to play it, Peter Buck has to go and buy the guitar tab from a local music shop.I guess this is the modern version of that.
