They've been putting out hits since the 1980s - but many fans still have no idea what R.E.M's iconic band name actually stands for.
Formed by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, R.E.M became one of the first alternative rock bands.
Berry left the band in 1997 due to severe health issues - and 14 years later, its remaining members decided to part their ways, having sold more than 90 million albums worldwide.
Some of their most popular songs include Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts, The One I love, It's the End of the World as We Know It, Blue, Oh My Heart, Shiny Happy people, Nightswimming and Drive.
