Apocalyptic thriller The Beach House arrived last month, scaring the pants off film fans with its tense action scenes and gruesome body horror.

Most of you know Jay Baruchel from his comedy work. Sure, he’s a very talented comedic actor, but his talents run far deeper than that. Behind the camera, he co-wrote the sports dramedy Goon, as well as co-writing and also directing its sequel Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Now, nearly a decade after he first set out to make it, his sophomore feature Random Acts of Violence is hitting screens. A gory and powerful horror movie (our review can be found right here), it’s a whole new side of Baruchel. Recently, I got on the phone with him to discuss not just directing, but also his pure love for the horror genre as well.

“Random Acts Of Violence” Is A Gnarly Passion Project From Jay Baruchel

Horror movies can easily get lost going down a path of just being a gore-fest or just being one big metaphor. The most successful efforts in the genre manage to do more than one thing, or at least aren’t completely simple to pin down. Jay Baruchel’s second outing behind the camera, the horror flick Random Acts of Violence, manages to do this with aplomb. Not only is it gnarly and gory, it’s peddling a message, one rooted in the creative process. Almost a decade after he first began to try to bring this story to the screen, it’s now coming out on Shudder and is well worth your time. For Baruchel, as well as fans of the genre, it’s worth the wait.
