Believe and its TuneCore subsidiary have surveyed nearly 1600 self-releasing artists about generative AI. Half of those surveyed said that they had a positive perception of artificial intelligence and would be willing to offer their music for the training of AI models.Around a third said they were interested in using AI as part of their music-making process, with a similar amount reckoning AI technologies could help them with their marketing and promotion.Commenting on the study, TuneCore CEO Andreea Gleeson says: “As AI continues to be a conversation topic across creative industries, we sought to engage directly with independent artists to determine their awareness of AI and how they’re most interested in engaging with it”.“TuneCore’s main priorities lie in the interests of our artists”, she adds, “so the responses to this survey will help us enable them to utilise AI on our platform with consent, control, transparency, and fair monetary compensation”.Of those surveyed, 35% said that they are interested in using AI in their creative process, while 31% said it could help with marketing and promotion around releases.Meanwhile, 18% said they might use AI technologies to create promotional content – including videos to post to TikTok and Instagram – while 16% said they were interested in how AI could help them more generally engage and develop their fanbases.In terms of allowing tech companies to use their creative output in order to train generative AI models, 50% showed a willingness to allow that to happen.

DIY distributor TuneCore has announced a partnership with Grimes to distribute music created using the AI version of her voice. The distributor will then sort out splitting any monies generated by those tracks between Grimes and the other music-makers.During the recent flurry of AI-generated tracks that imitate the voices of existing artists, Grimes announced that she would be happy for people to release music with an AI-generated version of her voice, providing they agreed to share any recording royalties 50/50.

Thania Garcia Elf.Tech, Grimes’ newly minted AI program, has partnered with TuneCore to let artists distribute collaborations created through Grimes’ Elf.Tech AI to all major streaming platforms. The pilot program will allow artists to employ Elf.Tech, created by Grimes in partnership with CreateSafe, to co-create music with her AI voice and split 50% split of the revenue with her. The “GrimesAI voiceprints” can be exported and included in the creator’s original compositions, then uploaded to TuneCore with GrimesAI as a main or featured artist once Grimes has approved the collaboration. TuneCore will be responsible for surveying the content to ensure it adheres to DSP guidelines, validate accurate royalty splits and ultimately distribute the music to streaming platforms around the world. The initiative is part of Believe’s (TuneCore’s parent company) AI strategy.

DEALSSparks have announced that they will release their 26th album ‘The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte’ on 26 May. The release sees them return to Universal Music’s Island Records, the label that put out their 1974 breakthrough ‘Kimono My House’. “Here we find ourselves in 2023, almost 50 years later, re-signing with Island Records, again with an album that we all feel is as bold and uncompromising as anything we did back then, or for that matter, anytime throughout our career”, say Ron and Russell Mael.
