Matt Minton mminton@variety.com When singer-songwriter Mike Hadreas sits down with his therapist, he admits that he often doesn’t know where to begin with his feelings — which might not be surprising for an artist who, over the course of six albums and 15 years, has worked primarily by himself. But for his latest effort, “Glory,” Hadreas — known in the music world as Perfume Genius — opened up his voice and emotions, as well as his recording process, in what has been described as his first “band” album, featuring artists like Aldous Harding alongside his longtime collaborators Blake Mills and Alan Wyffels. “I don’t know if I consciously did it, but it made sense that building the songs felt more collaborative in ways they hadn’t been in the last few records,” Hadreas tells Variety.

Perfume Genius has shared a new single featuring Aldous Harding – listen to ‘No Front Teeth’ below.The collaborative song serves as the second preview of the singer-songwriter’s seventh album ‘Glory’, which is due for release on March 28 via Matador (pre-order/pre-save here).Following on from lead single ‘It’s A Mirror’, the latest track from Perfume Genius (real name Mike Hadreas) begins with a stripped-back, acoustic guitar-driven verse, ahead of haunting and ethereal vocals from Harding.“Better days/ Nothing touch me/ Light it breaks on the wings of a dove/ Better days/ Nothing touch me/ Let it take everything that I love,” sings the New Zealand folk artist. ‘No Front Teeth’ then breaks out into a raw and rocky instrumental.“No front teeth/ Where they all used to go/ Sewn in my pocket lining/ Suddenly/ When the cover is blown/ Can I just rest beside it,” Hadreas adds in the single, which is bolstered by time changes throughout.The song is accompanied by an official music video, directed by Cody Critcheloe, who helmed Perfume Genius’ ‘Queen’ video.Per a press release, the surreal ‘No Front Teeth’ visuals represent a “fever dream” that is “unhinged, sexually charged, hilarious and riveting, leaving the viewer questioning what is real and what is an aberration”.The clip stars Hadreas and Harding, alongside Perfume Genius bandmember and co-writer Alan Wyffels. Perfume Genius has shared a new surreal short film that is an accompaniment to his new album, ‘Ugly Season’.The 28 minute short film, entitled Pygmalion’s Ugly Season, is directed by visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite and features music from the album, as well as an appearance from Perfume Genius – real name Michael Hadreas.In a press release, Hadreas said: “I gave him [Satterwhite] free reign,” when it came to directing the short.He went on: “We’re both the same age, I feel very aligned with Jacolby when it comes to taste and certain pop culture obsessions. On Friday, Mike Hadreas a.k.a. Perfume Genius will share his new album Ugly Season. The new music was created more collaboratively than ever before, beginning as a soundtrack for a dance piece by Kate Wallich and Hadreas called The Sun Still Burns Here with producer Blake Mills and Hadreas's partner Alan Wyffels contributing to the composition.
