A data breach at Tameside Council saw more than the personal information of 6,000 staff members leaked on its website. A Freedom of Information request submitted to the council in December found that 6,345 staff members had some of their data shared.
The council, confirming the incident that dates back to 2019, claimed that no data that could result in a security risk or an identity theft was leaked.
The council described the incident as an ‘error’ when publishing senior officer salaries where extra details about staff was temporarily available to members of the public. The council went on to say that due to the information being ‘deeply embedded’ in their website, there was low risk of members of the public accessing it.
A Tameside Council spokesperson said: “As a council we have a statutory duty under the transparency requirements to publish our senior officer salaries.
