Former footballer Paul Merson claims the ITV show Harry’s Heroes saved his life. He suffered a meltdown on last year’s reality show starring Harry Redknapp when he realised his gambling addiction was out of control because of his drinking.
When filming ended, the former Arsenal ace went to Alcoholics Anonymous and is now doing his best to stay sober and bet-free.
He claims if he hadn’t taken part in the show – in which ex-Spurs manager Harry rounded up retired players who also included Neil “Razor” Ruddock and Lee Sharpe – he might not be here now.
Merson said: “This show saved my life – no question, 100%. I was drinking at least 35 pints a week and gambling. “But I’m sober and bet-free now.
