Villarreal defender Pau Torres has already outlined his desire to remain in the Champions League amid ongoing links connecting him with a move to Manchester United this summer.
The Manchester Evening News understands that the centre-back is on United's radar and that talks have been held to gauge the possibility of a move for Torres.
New manager Erik ten Hag is also understood to have been consulted on the prospect of bringing him to Old Trafford. It is not the first time that Torres — who recently helped Villarreal reach the semi-finals of the Champions League — has been on United's radar; they were interested in him last summer as a back-up option to Raphael Varane.
And Torres has continued to go from strength-to-strength over the last 12 months, meaning United have reignited their interest.
