Owen Farrell and England's top rugby players take pay cuts to save club game

England captain Owen Farrell has joined the nation’s top rugby players in agreeing to a 25 per cent pay cut in an effort to keep the Gallagher Premiership afloat.

The coronavirus crisis led the Rugby Football Union to end the 2019/20 season with immediate effect yesterday for all English league, cup and county rugby below the top flight.

And while Premiership boss Darren Childs spoke bullishly of his intention “to restart as soon as it’s safe to do so” the challenge for clubs is to live to see that day.
