For me, though, it was the emotional highlight of the year. “All Quiet on the Western Front““Avatar: The Way of Water““The Banshees of Inisherin““Elvis““Tár““Top Gun: Maverick““Triangle of Sadness““Women Talking”With these two smart, young filmmakers (below), the word “visionary” has been thrown around a lot — for good reason.
They won both the Directors Guild Award and the Critics Choice Award for Best Director.Frankly, I’d give it to James Cameron for “Avatar: Way of Water,” but he’s not nominated.
