The number of coronavirus patients who have died in the UK has risen by 20 in the last 24 hours. A total of 55 people have now died after testing positive for Covid-19, health secretary Matt Hancock confirmed in a statement made in Parliament.
That number is up by 20 from 35 yesterday, and includes the first death in Wales. Mr Hancock told MPs the pandemic is “the most serious public health emergency that our nation has faced for a generation”.
He said: “Our goal is to protect life. Our actions have meant that the spread of the virus has been slowed in the UK and I want to pay tribute to the officials at Public Health England and the NHS for their exemplary approach to contact tracing and their work so far."
