A new alert issued for the UK means that the northern lights may be viewable in the skies tonight (December 1). A red alert has been announced by AuroraWatch UK, which is run by the Space and Planetary Physics group at Lancaster University's Department of Physics, following an examination of geomagnetic activity measurements.
The likeliness of an aurora taking place in the UK is generally split into four categories by the organisation; green, yellow, amber, and red.
According to AuroraWatch UK, a red alert indicates that an aurora event is "likely" and is likely to be seen by the naked eye from anywhere in the country.
That means no matter where you are tonight, you may catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
