New York flight lands more than 3,000 miles away in Manchester after 'emergency'

A flight has been diverted to Manchester Airport due to a 'medical emergency' - more than 3,000 miles from its destination. Condor flight CFG2016 left Frankfurt, in Germany, at 11.45am and was due to land at John F.

Kennedy airport in New York later today (May 8). But while flying above the UK, the aircraft was forced to change course. The flight was seen circling above Wigan and St Helens earlier this afternoon.

It then diverted to Manchester Airport, where it was seen landing at around 2.30pm. Manchester Airport confirmed to the Liverpool Echo that the diversion was due to a 'medical emergency' on board, causing the flight to divert to the nearest airport. One person wrote: "It's currently circling over my house in St Helens! "Presume its got a lot of fuel to burn off?" Another said: "It's holding at 6000ft and circling between Kirkby, St Helens and Wigan." One source told the Manchester Evening News that the aircraft was 'airborne for almost three hours before circling over Liverpool to burn excess fuel', prior to landing in Manchester.
