New York Covid variant 'that may evade jabs immunity' now in UK with three cases detected

A new coronavirus variant which was first identified in New York is in the UK and there are fears it could make the Covid jab less effective.

Health chiefs have confirmed on Monday that swabbing suggests the B.1.526 strain, which has caused havoc in New York, may have been in Britain for at least a month.

Scientists tracking the constantly-evolving virus say they have so far found three cases of B.1.526 in the UK. Public Health England say the virus would have been picked up in travellers quarantining after flying into Britain.

They did not deny it has already been detected three times in the UK. The US is not on the government's quarantine 'red list' which mean anyone arriving from there does not have to quarantine in a hotel instead
