More than 11,400 people from across the UK have signed an online petition calling for the concessionary bus travel scheme to include free country-wide train journeys.
In Scotland, people over 60 are eligible to apply for the National Entitlement Card, it’s the same age in Wales and those living in London.
The scheme applies to those over 66 - State Pension age - across the rest of England and Ireland. However, petition creator, Ronald John Bradbur, proposes that providing more access to free travel would “greatly enhance” the mental wellbeing of pensioners by “making it easier for them to get out of the house and travel to meet others and visit other places”.
The UK Government will respond to the proposals in the ‘Extend the older person's bus pass to cover free train travel’ petition, now that it has passed the 10,000 signature threshold.
