National Highways has issued an amber 'severe weather alert' ahead of strong winds on Friday (January 24). Road users in the North West, North East and Yorkshire are advised to check ahead and plan for disruption to their journeys, with gales expected to reach 90mph in peak places.

It follows an amber Met Office warning over Storm Éowyn as an area of deep pressure moves in from the Atlantic, bringing heavy rain and gales.

National Highways has warned drivers to 'take extra care', particularly in high-sided vehicles, and plan their journeys ahead of time.

They added forecasters predict winds will quickly increase through the morning to widely gusting 60-70mph and for a time around the middle of the day 70-80mph for much of Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland.
