A mum-of-three was “devastated” to learn that her daughter may never walk, talk, or eat on her own again after a cold-like virus left her with brain damage.
Naomi Wall, 29, from Essex, said her three-year-old daughter, Daisy-Rae Reid, became unwell in April this year when she started vomiting and struggling to stay awake.
Prior to this, Daisy-Rae “loved her food” and “loved running around”, so Naomi initially thought she was suffering from a sickness bug. Read more: Three signs of sickness bug that mean you need to see a GP as it sweeps UK Naomi, who is now Daisy’s full-time carer along with her partner 36-year-old plasterer Matthew Reid, took her daughter to hospital after she presented with “weakness” and “tremors” on her left side.
They were initially sent home with antibiotics as doctors suspected tonsillitis. But when Daisy’s condition worsened and she struggled to stay awake, Naomi called an ambulance and her daughter was taken to hospital again, where a CT scan revealed she had encephalitis (swelling and inflammation on her brain caused by an infection).
