MSPs will today be asked to declare a housing emergency in Scotland amid a winter rough sleeping epidemic. They will vote on a motion that was has been sparked by spiralling numbers of street sleeping and families stuck in temporary homes, revealed in the Daily Record.

Scottish Labour’s housing spokesman Mark Griffin will ask MSPs to follow the lead of Edinburgh City Council, which declared a housing emergency earlier this month.Griffin said: “After a year of SNP turmoil and the Tory mortgage bombshell, this motion is long overdue. “In the past year, homelessness has hit a record high, mortgages have soared and, under the SNP, new home building has plummeted.“Scots are being left with nowhere to turn while they give more and more of their paycheque just to have somewhere to live.“Scots are crying out for support with this crisis, but nothing is being offered.

The SNP must heed Labour’s call and declare a housing emergency across Scotland.”The call comes as a record- breaking 15,000 Scots are homeless or in temporary accommodation, with the number of rough sleepers on the rise.

Scottish Labour claims that the number of homes built under the SNP’s social homes programme this year has plummeted by 26% compared with 2022-23.Rising interest rates have seen average mortgage repayments increase by up to £190 a month.
