Morrisons no longer most expensive for these shopping essentials as supermarket takes over for second week

A supermarket has taken over from Morrisons as the most expensive for these shopping essentials. Asda took back the unfortunate title last week after hiking the price of budget tea bags and remains bottom of our poll for a second week.

Our price comparison has been looking at the cost of the same eight budget essentials across the main six supermarkets since March 2022. Moneysaving ideas: Asda's £12.89 bill is now 10% more than the cheapest retailer, Lidl, at £11.58.

That's for a basket which includes butter, milk, bread, tea bags, coffee, beans, chicken and mince. This week is the first time in a long time without any price changes at any of the supermarkets, a clear sign that the pace of hikes is slowing.

While that's good news for shoppers, prices are still much higher than they were. When we did our first comparison last year, only one retailer topped £10 for the eight items - the cheapest was Aldi at £9.13.
