Researchers at a higher education think tank called the move an 'innovative intervention'. A cost of living working group was established at the university and £170 payments made to more than 90pc of its students.
It comes as they called on the government establish a cost of living taskforce. The Higher Education Policy Institute found more than a quarter of UK universities have a food bank service, with 11pc giving out vouchers.
Universities in Wales; the south west; the north east; and the south east were most likely to operate a food bank, while those in Northern Ireland and London were least likely, the research reveals.
