More than 150,000 naloxone kits have been given out in Scotland to help prevent fatal overdoses from drugs like heroin since 2011.

The latest report shows 28,689 kits were handed out in 2022-23. This is a slight drop from the previous year, but overall, 151,944 kits have been distributed since the programme started.

Naloxone can reverse the effects of a potentially deadly overdose from opioid drugs such as heroin and morphine. In April 2023, it was estimated that there were 705 kits for every 1,000 people with drug problems.

Most of these kits were given out at community outlets, while some were given to prisoners upon release and by the Scottish Ambulance Service.Since 2019, naloxone has been available in a nasal spray form, which is becoming more popular.
