Moment humpback whale leaps out of water in Clyde leaving onlookers stunned

The Clyde is arguably Scotland's most famous river, with a storied history of shipbuilding and taking pride of place in many of the villages and towns that it flows through - with the city of Glasgow its most notable.Its importance to the west of Scotland is immortalised in Kenneth McKellar's eponymous Song of the Clyde, which speaks of the places that the water passes as well as highlighting the vast number of activities partaken on the river.But it's not just people and places that enjoy the Clyde - it's wildlife too.

Thousands of birds, including ducks, gannets, and guillemots, can be found on its shores, and its not uncommon to see porpoises, seals, and even the occasional basking shark.And one one Sunday morning in June 2023, the famous waters played host to a huge visitor - a humpback whale.

The giant sea creature was filmed leaping out of the Firth of Clyde, near Dunoon in Argyll, by astonished onlookers.Dawn Petherick, a retreat leader from nearby Innellan, captured the epic moment on camera.

She had swiftly made her way to the shore after being alerted to a sighting via their Clyde Cetaceans Sightings WhatsApp group.
