Manchester council's plans to cut costs is not going to plan with the town hall forecasting an overspend of nearly £9m this year.
Most of this increase comes in the adult social care budget where demand has been higher than expected. Demand for care homes in Manchester dropped during the pandemic and this trend was expected to continue after the Covid crisis.
It comes after council officers spoke of a 'reluctance' for families to place loved ones in care homes. Efforts have also been made to reduce demand for residential and nursing homes through a council programme which aims to support people living in their own homes for longer.
