Tiny plastic particles hidden in food, water and even in the air have been found inside human brains, accumulating at an alarming rate.
A new study has found microplastics – plastic pieces less than five millimetres long – at higher levels in the brain than in the liver and kidney.
It also found that significantly more microplastics in post-mortem samples from 2024 than in those from 2016, and higher levels in brains from people diagnosed with dementia.
The research team highlights that it is not yet known whether microplastics are harmful or toxic to humans, with the study not finding a cause-and-effect link between plastic particles and health problems like dementia.
