Met Office issues UK thunderstorm warning for TODAY amid heavy downpours

The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for today as heavy downpours continue to fall. The yellow storm warning will come into force at 2pm this afternoon (Tuesday) and will last until 11.59pm tonight.

It covers the Greater Manchester area, as well as other parts of the North West and parts of the East Midlands, West Midlands, Wales, South West England and Yorkshire.

Forecasters predict that thundery downpours this afternoon 'may lead to some flooding in a few places'. Driving conditions are likely to be affected in the heavy rain. There may 'perhaps be some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes'. Issuing the warning, the forecaster said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out this afternoon and move northwards, slowly dying out during the evening and first part of the night.
