The Met Office has issued a bleak forecast for August as the summer holidays get underway. Following a brief warm spell in the UK, Brits can expect thunder and heavy rain to hit by the end of this week, dashing hopes of a long hot summer.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-20s in some areas over the next few days. However, showers and cloudy conditions are forecast for parts of the north.

Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be drier and brighter, with sunny spells, before more unsettled conditions move in towards the end of the week. Temperatures on Thursday and Friday are expected to be nearer average. According to the Met Office's latest long-range forecast, as we move towards August there could be thunder and heavy rain in store for some places.
