Five years ago in Rio, Max Whitlock became the first British gymnast to win Olympic gold. He topped the podium twice, with his pommel horse and floor routines, and also claimed an all-round bronze, making him the most decorated gymnast Britain has produced.
So, as the 28-year-old headed to Tokyo for this year’s Games, fans were hoping for a successful defence of his pommel horse title.
Among them was wife Leah, 29, who was glued to her TV at home with their two-year-old daughter Willow and the rest of Max’s family.
And their cheers were deafening as he performed a dazzling and technically brilliant routine to claim gold – and become the most successful gymnast in Olympic history on the apparatus.
