Matt Damon was moved to tears at Cannes by the reaction of the audience to his new movie Stillwater. The now 50-year-old actor became genuinely overwhelmed with emotion at the Cannes Film Festival as he soaked up a standing ovation from the audience.

In the film, he plays a hard-bitten Oklahoma construction worker whose daughter (Abigail Breslin) is imprisoned for murder in France, after being convicted of killing her ex-girlfriend while studying abroad.

The plot immediately feels like a shadowy remake of the Amanda Knox story. Damon’s character Bill Baker is determined to prove his child’s innocence so travels to France.
