Manchester United are set to play rivals Leeds United on Wednesday as their pre-season campaign kicks off in Oslo. Among those who will be motivated to make a statement during the game is Matej Kovar, a young goalkeeper looking to become the first backup option for the 2023/24 season.
Kovar has been at United since he was 17, but now aged 23 he’s still yet to make a senior appearance. But his loan move back to his native Czech Republic might have brought him back into Erik tenHag's thinking.
He played for Sparta Prague where he would already be familiar with some teammates, having played with them at national U21 level, but would join them during a miserable run of form.
He immediately became their number 1 choice, starting after only one training session with them.
