Cottage pie is a British classic with many people in the UK sitting down of an evening to dig in to the dish.There are many recipes online, however there is one ingredient by Mary Berry which may be unusual to some, but it adds a lot of flavour and takes it to a new level.
Sharing her secret ingredient to elevate her cottage pie, she adds two tablespoons of brown muscovado sugar to the cottage pie filling.
This is because adding the sugar will help to enhance the flavour of savoury dishes as it balances out the more acidic ingredients in the recipe.
It also adds to the richness of the meaty flavour.After sharing this on her BBC television series ‘Mary Berry Cooks’, she explained her easy recipe "elevates" the cottage pie to “new luxury levels".
