The MEN understands talks are progressing and there is cautious optimism of United finalising a move for the 18-year-old, but the proposed deal has been described as 'not straightforward' by sources.
Traore, born in the Ivory Coast, has not attained an international cap but may not need a work permit if he has an Italian passport, having moved to Italy at a young age.
United have partly moved for Traore this summer before new criteria is drafted up for Premier League clubs to sign 18 to 21-year-old foreign talent post-Brexit.
