United’s 2-0 win at Leeds on Sunday means they sit third on 46 points having played a game more than City, who are on 48 points, and two more than Arsenal, who sit on 51 points.
The top two meet for the first time in the Premier League on Wednesday in what is due to be a seismic game in the season. A City win would see them leapfrog Arsenal into first on goal difference having played a game more.
It would keep United just five points off top spot if they do.
